About
Hi, My name is Socratis or Soc* (this is kind of the whole point, wait, you’ll see)
You can call me either, I really don’t mind, well, maybe I do. You see, I’m Greek. But, like so many other Greeks, I’m about to become a migrant. This is because I met ‘the one‘ recently and she comes from a family of migrants that chose to settle in Australia. So, what can you do, she’s lived here, soon I’ll be living there. Which brings me to the point of this blog.
The girlfriend has pointed out that Greeks, whilst just about everywhere on this globe, and clearly the cleverest, oldest, smartest, most beautiful, did I mention Ancient-est culture on Earth, are actually not universally adored. In fact, she tells me, that sometimes, and I still find this hard to believe, non-Greeks are racist (can you believe it?) towards Greeks. Apparently in some parts of the world they call us WOGS. She has told me to expect to be called that by some people sometimes in the great land of the kangaroo. I’d never even heard the word before. And also, again, Greeks – what’s not to love???
She’s also told me that I need to practice my English. Hmmmm. I don’t like speaking English. I don’t know why. In fact, I dislike speaking English so much that I have developed the rather unfortunate habit of speaking only in character. The character? The little guy you see on the left of the woggietalkie header. The Greek me. And the little guy you see on the left, well that’s soon to be Australian me, Soc, Socky or however the fuck it will be pronounced over there.
So, my point is, this blog, does not mean to offend, it’s just a tongue in cheek way of dealing with becoming a migrant, racism, speaking bloody English and, wait for it – having the bad luck to have an English teacher for a girlfriend, who’s not willing to help me improve my english for less than a euro per unknown word.
* this is not my real name, but it illustrates the point.
